Abstract
The topic of diversity and inclusion is increasingly becoming a polarizing one in the U.S., and the workplace is no different. We’ll discuss how you can be prepared and some of the best practices in navigating this subject as you make the transition from academia to the real world.

Bio
Mr. Darrell J. Roberts is the Deputy Executive Director for Operations – Reactor and Response Programs, at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He leads the USNRC’s Offices of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, Nuclear Security and Incident Response, and the NRC’s four regional offices in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and Dallas. He has a BS in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and an MS in technical management from Johns Hopkins University. His nuclear career spans 35 years, beginning as a co-op student at Dominion Energy’s North Anna Power Station in 1986 while still attending Virginia Tech as an undergrad. Mr. Roberts joined the NRC upon graduation from Tech in 1989 and assumed his current position in October 2021. During his career, Mr. Roberts has served in a variety of roles of increasing responsibility, including as a reactor engineer at NRC headquarters, a resident inspector and senior resident inspector at two nuclear power plants in the Carolinas, and various supervisory and senior management roles, including regional administrator of the NRC’s office near Chicago, IL. In his current capacity, Mr. Roberts overseas the agency’s licensing and oversight programs for the 95 operating nuclear reactors throughout the U.S., as well as those advanced reactor designs that are either under construction or are being reviewed for future approval. Mr. Roberts has also served in a number of international collaborations, including as a U.S delegate to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Convention on Nuclear Safety and, currently, as the NRC’s lead representative for the IAEA’s Commission on Safety Standards, which meets semi-annually at IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, and includes representatives from dozens of countries with nuclear interests throughout the world. As a highly respected senior manager at NRC, Mr. Roberts has mentored dozens of fellow NRC employees and has recruited prospective employees at various events, including the National Society of Black Engineers conference and Virginia Tech’s annual Engineering Expo. He has also participated in various STEM events throughout his career. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., having joined Virginia Tech’s Eta Lambda chapter in 1987. Since January 2015, Mr. Roberts has been the owner and principal editor for the music blog, DJROBBLOG.com, and recently published an article ranking the top “nuclear” related tunes in popular music history.
